WiMAX 4G Is Ahead of Verizon's LTE, Sprint Says Sprint's 4G guy: Todd Rowley on the need for speed “ When it’s good, it’s very, very good – as speedy as a fast cable Internet connection. When it’s bad, it’s still pretty good.”

Now let’s talk about a revolutionary new device from CLEAR - the CLEAR Spot Personal Hotspot. This amazing little device allows Wi-Fi enabled devices to access CLEAR’s WiMAX network, and has a four-hour rechargeable battery life (it can also run on AC power). So for a one-time cost of $139, customers can connect their Wi-Fi devices at broadband speeds anywhere within a CLEAR coverage area!
Clearwire Sprint will continue to be the undisputed leader in the 3G-4G space while the new Clearwire (which includes Sprint’s previous 4G business unit XOHM) – with all of its cutting-edge partners – continues to build out a nationwide WiMAX network. Sprint will offer 4G technology which will operate on the Clearwire WiMAX network and will be the ONLY national wireless carrier to do so (through a structure similar to, but more broad than a typical MVNO.) Sprint’s majority ownership in the new Clearwire as well as its partnership with these technology leaders, will enable it to bring its 4G innovations quickly and efficiently to market. Clearwire (including XOHM, Sprint’s previous 4G business unit) has developed (in a consortia with other companies who are not part of Clearwire!) WiMAX and Sprint is harnessing the power of a 4G network now. Most importantly, it’s not just Sprint – there is an ecosystem of other companies that has converged around WiMAX globally: Intel, Samsung, Motorola, Nokia, Nokia Siemens, Google, ZTE, Zyxel. Clearwire has partnered with these companies to develop the ecosystem and technology to create the WiMAX infrastructure. XOHM - Sprint’s previous 4G business unit, XOHM, was combined with Clearwire on November 28, 2008. The new Clearwire is continuing to build the fastest mobile broadband network available in the U.S, among all national wireless carriers. With its WiMAX ecosystem, the new Clearwire will provide customers with new wireless data and web services by incorporating WiMAX capabilities in consumer electronic devices and unleashing the Internet from wires and place-based communications. 07/07/10 19:25
When talking about CLEAR’s Mobile Internet solution, we’re usually talking about the Clear USB Modem . This plug-and-play device runs on Windows XP and Windows Vista, and as of August 2009 is also compatible with Mac OS. Note: There are two versions of both Windows XP and Windows Vista out there - a 32-bit (normal) version and a 64-bit version. The different versions are available for different process types. Our Connection Manager supports both versions of both operating systems. Users can go anywhere within CLEAR’s coverage area and experience the same speed and consistency as at home, with up to 4 Mbps (or 6 Mbps with a Pick 2 plan) on the download and up to 500 Kbps on the upload . What differs by plan is the customer’s usage level, which we will discuss in a moment. Note that we will review, demonstrate and practice the installation of the Clear USB Modem on Day Two of this session.
Sprint 4G – the name of Sprint’s WiMAX services. Provides Wi-Fi-like experience in a city-sized hotspot. Sprint is bringing the internet to life with 4G and this dual-mode USB device delivers on our promise to offer an internet experience to a multitude of devices, faster than any other wireless service from a national carrier. WiMAX - Sprint 4G is powered by WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) WiMAX is a Fourth Generation technology (4G) created specifically for internet applications, services, and security, but designed for mobility. It is technology that provides reliable, broadband connections over large areas – even in challenging city environments. Think of it as the mobile version of basic DSL or Cable internet service – a city-sized hot spot! Sprint 4G represents a shift in the way people will use mobile broadband . Businesses, consumers and local governments will be able to extend their Internet experience beyond home or office use. Sprint 4G delivers average speeds of 2-4 Megabits downlink (and 0.5-1.5 Megabits uplink) in service areas. Peak speed of up to 12 Mbps downlink and up to 5 Mbps uplink in some service areas NOTE: Limited by launch cities where service is available
Sprint has 56% ownership of Clearwire who is responsible for building out the 2.5GHz spectrum for the 4G network. The advantage of the 2.5Ghz spectrum is that is delivers 4G signal very broadly in a market covering wider areas in a city. Sprint has also bought a lot of this spectrum with our holding represented on the right chart. The service penetrates one wall deep on most buildings depending on construction materials and glass windows. Some glass windows and construction materials can block RF signals making it difficult for the 4G service to penetrate deeply with in the building. On Sprint’s future product road map will be repeaters and antennas as well as Converged Network Solutions helping address in building penetration issues for 4G service. Verizon and AT&T have selected 700 Mhz as the spectrum they are purchasing to operate 4G on the LTE platform. They have purchased smaller amounts of this spectrum as compared to Sprint/Clearwire so we anticipate they will eventually have capacity and congestion issues like they are today on their 3G network w/ the iPhone. The 700 Mhz spectrum can penetrate up to two walls deep in a building but has more limitations on broader coverage in a city.
More than 1200 WiMAX enabled devices are currently in development. Think there might be an opportunity there?
CLEAR’s goal is to make sure that every customer gets the solution that is right for them. To that end, we offer several different products and many different pricing and service plans – this allows for many different combinations and therefore many different solutions.
Wi-Fi capable devices are becoming ubiquitous, but broad Wi-Fi coverage is not. Efforts by some cities to provide municipal Wi-Fi at low or no cost have fizzled. Bridging the gap between mobile broadband and the many Wi-Fi devices already being used is a great opportunity to strengthen the selling proposition for WiMAX. There are currently close to one billion Wi-Fi enabled devices that cannot connect to the Internet at any given time, because they are located outside the accessible range of a Wi-Fi access point (or “hotspot”). There may be WiMAX and cellular networks present at the device’s location, but they utilize a different radio type than Wi-Fi and therefore are of no use to the device.

This is where the CLEAR Spot Personal Hotspot comes in. The CLEAR Spot, manufactured by CradlePoint, bridges the gap between WiMAX and Wi-Fi devices . WiMAX service provides a single termination point. When a user has our WiMAX service, they use our Clear Modem or Clear USB Modem to access it. To easily share mobile service across multiple personal devices, or multiple users, requires CLEAR Spot. CLEAR Spot is the only portable hotspot device compatible with CLEAR mobile service, and it can be used as a tool to enhance value proposition of mobile service and drive incremental mobile service sales . The CLEAR Spot device adds significant perceived value to CLEAR service by enabling Wi-Fi devices to leverage our service. Multi-user capabilities don’t cannibalize subscription sales. The vendor, CradlePoint data indicates 80-85% of the time only one device is connected, so don’t worry about CLEAR Spot cannibalizing service sales. And when used in a shared workgroup, CLEAR Spot is a visible promotional vehicle for CLEAR service!
Partnership with Sprint enables Vodaplex resellers to profit from referring new customers. This includes the HTC Evo, the very first WiMAX enabled cell phone in the United States. National cell phone sales have topped over 13 million units each month for the last year. Do you think there might be an opportunity to refer people to the latest and greatest thing out there?
